IP lookup accuracy issues?
the new problem is, while some services offer really great speed for IP lookup, the actual accuracy of the location data, especially at the city or state level, is sometimes questionable or just plain outdated. it’s pretty frustrating because we’re seeing a lot of mismatches. this is really hurting our geo-targeting for ads and even our fraud detection efforts. we're getting false positives or just wasting ad spend because the IP data isn't quite right.
we’re currently using a pretty popular fast IP lookup service, but when we cross-reference the results with other, maybe slower but more established databases, there are often significant discrepancies. it's like, one service says a user is in Austin, TX, and another says Dallas, or even a completely different state. for dynamic IPs, it feels even worse.
so, the core question is, how do you guys balance the critical need for speed with the absolute necessity of accurate and frequently updated IP geolocation data? are there specific providers or strategies you’ve found that actually excel at both, particularly for dealing with dynamic IPs? it feels like we're always choosing between speed and reliability.
any tips or experiences with this? anyone faced this before?
