my IP address lookup tool is acting like a tourist

hey everyone, so our little tool 'what is my country?' which is supposed to tell you, well, what country you're in, seems to be having a bit of an identity crisis lately. it's usually spot on, a reliable ip address lookup service. but recently it's been acting like it's on a world tour, without actually leaving the server rack. users are reporting wildly inaccurate locations. i'm talking someone in new york showing up in, like, slovakia, or a user in california suddenly being told they're in florida. and these aren't just mobile users with dynamic ips, we're seeing it with static ip addresses too. it's like my ip address lookup is on vacation, sending postcards from random places.

we've tried a bunch of things already, naturally. i've tested it myself across chrome, firefox, edge, safari on mac and windows, even on a couple of phones. cleared caches, gone incognito, the whole nine yards. i even used a vpn to simulate different locations, thinking maybe it was just my own network, but nope, it still misbehaves. it's like it has a mind of its own. our backend logs show that the geolocation api is returning data, it's just, uh, creatively interpreted data sometimes.

i'm scratching my head here. my first thought was maybe our specific ip database provider is having a bad week or something, but i checked their status and everything seems fine on their end. could it be some weird caching issue on our server or cdn that's holding onto old data? or maybe something quirky with how it handles ipv6 versus ipv4 addresses? we're mostly ipv4 but you never know. seems like a real puzzler.

so, i'm reaching out to the collective wisdom here. has anyone else experienced their ip address lookup or geolocation tools justโ€ฆ making things up? any recommendations for really robust, reliable ip geolocation services that don't decide to send users on imaginary trips? or any debugging strategies for these kinds of tools that i might be missing? keen to hear about common pitfalls or 'oh, that's what it was!' moments others have had. thanks in advance for any insights!

Hey Zane Adebayo,
your IP address lookup is on vacation, sending postcards from random places.
I know how frustrating it is when your `geo-targeting` goes rogue; I've had similar headaches recently. Beyond database issues, double-check your server's handling of `X-Forwarded-For` headers if you're behind a proxy or CDN, as that's a common culprit for misidentifying the true client IP, especially with mixed IPv4/IPv6 traffic. For robust `IP geolocation API` services, you could cross-verify with tools like our What is my IP Address or What is My Location? - Find Your Current Coordinates & Map, alongside industry alternatives such as MaxMind GeoIP2 or IPinfo.io. Hope this helps your conversions!

Okay, that's really helpful Amina Adebayo. Checking X-Forwarded-For headers is a good shout, and the suggestions for other IP geolocation APIs are useful too. I'll definitely be coming back to this thread as I work through it.
