Why is my 'What is my City Name' tool's IP lookup returning wildly inaccurate geolocation data?
man, i'm pulling my hair out with our 'What is my City Name' tool. it's driving me absolutely insane. been trying to fix this for hours, days even, and i'm just stuck.
the whole point of the tool is to give users their city name based on their IP, but lately, the ip lookup is completely failing us. we're getting wildly inaccurate geolocation data. i've seen ips from new york showing up in germany, or users in california getting mapped to texas. it's not just off by a little, it's completely wrong, like a broken compass. this messes up everything for our users who just want to know their simple location. i've checked our api keys like a dozen times, re-verified the ip geolocation service provider we're using (thought maybe they had an issue), and even tried testing with a bunch of known static ip addresses. server logs aren't really showing anything obvious either, no big error messages popping out. i even looked at our GeoIP database config to see if something was corrupted or outdated.
i'm seriously desperate here. has anyone faced anything like this before? are there any common pitfalls with ip geolocation services that i might be missing? any alternative solutions or debugging tips would be a lifesaver right now. we need this tool to work correctly and reliably again asap. thanks in advance!

Answered 1 week ago- Wildly inaccurate IP geolocation often stems from users being behind VPNs or proxy servers; ensure your IP intelligence service includes robust proxy detection to filter these.
- Additionally, verify the data accuracy and freshness of your current GeoIP database provider, as some services have outdated or lower-quality datasets leading to such discrepancies.
